February 20, 2020: Week 2 Geo-conquest

This week we will seek to
Open minds
Make connections
Be inspired
through the lens of Geo-Conquest
as we study the principle of "A good leader has good character"

As we look around the world, we can see examples of people demonstrating the character of good leadership not only in many countries but in many different ways.  This week, think about the examples of leadership you find in our study of Africa, it's history and people and add another column to your T-chart!

To kick-off this week, let's get our brains thinking Africa and leadership:

OPEN YOUR MIND & MAKE CONNECTIONS!
Continent for the month: Africa
Book for the week: "A Long Walk To Water"

1. PROJECTS:  Choose any of the following (do as many as you'd like!) to enhance your learning.

* Draw an outline of Africa
* Tell a folktale, fable or legend from Africa
* Take the Seterra challenge and master one of the tests on Africa
* Bring a representative piece of art from Africa
* Mark all the temples on a map
* Fill in a blank map
* Write down 10 interesting facts about Africa
* Bring a movie/CD with dance or song from Africa, like check out this video with an example and instructions!

* Read a brief biography about a famous person from Africa
* Make a more detailed map of Africa adding either physical features or political boundaries.
* Make a food that would be considered culturally unique.
* Act out a story or legend either by yourself or with a group.

2. CURRENT EVENTS: Watch CNN 10 (formally student news) 5 days this week (parental preview/support is recommended) and then bring your favorite or most interesting news story to share. Look for examples of leadership anywhere in the world

3. READ "A LONG WALK TO WATER": please mark/record quotes or parts you like as you go!
Consider this question: It is called "A Long Walk To Water." This book contains the stories of two different people. Does this title apply to both of them? Why or why not?

Now! Super important part! Remember your T-Chart? Write down "Africa/Current Events" on the top of the third column and add to your list of characteristics that you admire and that you share!

BE INSPIRED!
After everything you have done above, what do you feel inspired to do with the knowledge you gained? How can it make your life better? Or perhaps the lives of someone else?
Please share what you learned through a Marco Polo message to the group, private Youtube video,
make a prezi and share it, take pictures of what you do, or share your information in a separate
post or in the comments below! If you do a separate post, please include "February Leadership: Week 2" in the title.

LOOKING AHEAD
We are reading "Book of Three" for our main book this month, to be discussed in three weeks.
You might want to start reading it soon.
Please consider getting it on audio if that is easier for you :D.

Also, I want to have an "elocution" moment on week 4 (that same week).
Please pick a scripture, poem, speech or lines from a play that you want to memorize and
give in front of the group to practice public speaking.  Think about clarity of speech, volume, speed, etc as you practice reciting it.  This can be done as a family, of course, or can be something that you memorized a long time ago.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Comments

  1. I liked this video that further talked about the culture and attributes of the saints in Africa. I was particularly struck by how they are happy with so little. I think this is a good attribute of a leader: being willing to sacrifice and being willing to accept what life or God has given them and continue to not only survive but thrive and help others to do the same.

  2. When we watched CNN 10 today, it covered why we have the Oscars and the Grammies and award ceremonies like that. Apparently it is to help the actors and actresses feel better about themselves. I don't know if that is the kind of leader I want, someone who needs someone else's affirmation that they are doing well...to the point that millions of dollars are spent in trying to advertise the person in a kind of "scratch my back, I'll scratch yours." Perhaps I shouldn't look to them as leaders and just as artists being supported in their artistry.

We also saw how a charitable group was going to the hurricane wash-out site of the Bahamas, where they plan to be there for a couple years to help clean up the area to make it livable, with housing and school facilities. It was neat to see a woman give what she could--her time--and how rewarded she felt.

  3. And on Seterra I went for 41% in 7 mins to 71% in 3:31! There is hope if my old brain can improve that much!

  4. Piper: Ι did 100% in 2:14 after a long time on the computer.

  5. We have been reading/listening to "Long Walk to Water" and have been realizing how blessed we are for the simple pleasures of life. I can't even imagine having to send one of my children (or walk myself) ALL day just to get enough water for the family. We were also realizing how blessed we are to have a safe home (comparatively) to what most people in Africa have. We don't have to deal with constant warring where our family's and our own lives are at risk. Puts a new perspective on things. Helps us be more grateful. :)
