"Week 4": Imaginative Arts

Image
This week we will seek to Open minds Make connections Be inspired through the lens of Imaginative Arts to bring ourselves to a beautiful conclusion for this "month"! Check out this video to kick off this week! OPEN YOUR MIND! I remember hearing the story when I was a kid about a girl that went to take her daddy his lunch.  He was digging in a hole so deep she couldn't see him.  She dropped her lunch down to him, but when he asked her to jump down to him, she was scared.  He told her that she could trust him, even though she couldn't see him.  He could see that she was terrified but encouraged her and she did it.  She jumped.  The story was told beautifully, capturing what faith it took the girl to jump into the darkness. Faith and love can help us do some beautiful things... ...things that are scary, things that save, things that comfort.  And it is our spiritual connection with God that can make this happen. It...

Hyrum:   Finished the book, discussed it and thought about names he gives himself. He also did other riddles: "One of them worked the way they said it and the way I said it, even though they were different.  I learned that there can be multiple ways to answer questions.  It was pretty satisfying." Puzzles in relationships: "Yesterday when Hava was babysitting the younger kids and I was home, I acted like she was older than me and I tried thinking about what I would do if she was older than me and something that I did was I asked her if I could help more, I think.  And when I did that, it went pretty well and we didn't really argue at all that I know of."  "I also did the questionnaire for fun facts about myself." Hyrum also filled out a detailed map of South America and it's major physical features. Piper:  Piper found the following quote that was really great and then recorded other info on this page: a map, names that she wants for hers...

Back and up again!!! Yay!!! Thanks for carrying on without me :D. I am excited to get going again! For this week we will start off with a discussion of "Ugly One."   Pay attention to the truths you learn; the truths the characters learned and how it affected their lives!  We will be playing 2 truths and a lie so start thinking about interesting things about yourselves. We will also be talking about names that we give ourselves-- mother, sister, friend, daughter, ugly, happy, athletic, shy --and the power they give over us. Inspirements for this book could be: -draw a picture of a scene in which truth is revealed or discovered -find a favorite quote and share it -act out a scene for your family and share what it taught you about truth. -study more about this culture and share three interesting truths that you discover! -come up with your own! Please do one thing and then share it with us this week as part of our book discussion! I would like you all to watch ...

Oct Week 2: Geography

This week we will be exploring elements of Budapest and Hungary as we discuss our findings in The Good Master.   To get the most out of our discussion, please come having read the book, and bring your inspirements to our Vanguard meeting!  I can't wait to learn from you all!

Oct Week 1: Leadership - Florence Nightingale

This week we talked Leadership.  Malia led a discussion about the leadership qualities Florence Nightingale exhibited, and this led to a discussion about various other leaders who demonstrate the same qualities.  We spoke of selflessness, humility, perseverance and a willingness to work right along side (or even before) the people you are leading.  We compared these qualities to such leaders as Jesus, Martin Luther King Jr, Abinadi and many more! See the comments below for Kai's inspirement project that he wasn't able to share during our discussion due to technical difficulties. :)  If anyone else has any inspirements to share, please do so!  It's always great to see what you come up with! Thank you, everyone for contributing to the discussion!  We look forward to seeing and hearing from everyone again next week!

(We are new to Vanguard so this is my feeble attempt to open a discussion this week.  Input is welcome!) This week we are focusing on Imaginative Arts.  Some of us may have been reading from the following books: Heidi, The Lost Prince and/or Writing Magic. Vanguard this week will be completely student led!  We will start with our usual Vanguard opening led by Hyrum.  Then we take turns sharing all of your wonderful Imaginative Art inspirements, based on Heidi or the Lost Prince - or anything else you might be inspired by! Look at your Vanguard Core/Crust sun - are there any skills you want to develop in the Imaginative Arts section?  This is a great opportunity for you to work on those skills!  What does "Imaginative Arts" mean to you?  I started brainstorming a couple of ideas in the video below, but don't limit yourself to these... If you would like to, and have time before we meet tomorrow, start brainstorming and create an inspire...

Malia: Some patterns aren't always all the same, like the fly swatter: It has different lines that make it a pattern.  It's still a pattern, even if it's not perfectly symmetrical. Patterns can also be 3 dimensional like this star decoration: It has a bunch of pyramid shapes all put together into a star.  This has diagonal lines kinds of like the spirals in the video. Kai: This towel has parallel seams that alternate This leaf has parallel veins running from the top to the bottom. The ball has rope wrapping horizontally around it as well as diagonal twists so it's a double pattern.
