Sept Week 2 Biesinger inspirements

Piper and Lily made a dinner from Poland (super yummy!)--pics later.

Hyrum:
  • Population: about 740 million. That’s sounds a lot but there are five times that number of people living today in Asia!
  • Land Area: 9,908,600 square kilometers (or 3,825,730 square miles) – it’s about a third of the size of Africa.
  • Countries46 countries (of which 27 are members of the European Union or EU).
  • Highest Peak: Mount Elbrus in Russia stands at 5,643 meters above sea level.
  • Largest Lake: Lake Ladoga in north western Russia has an area of 17,700 square kilometers (6,800 square miles).
  • Longest River: The Volga River in Russia is 3,530 kilometers (2,193 miles) long.
  • Smallest Country (by land area and population): Vatican City is a tiny country within the Italian city of Rome. The Pope, the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church, lives here along with its 800 other citizens.
  • Biggest Country (by land area): the Russian Federation is the biggest country by land area, not just in Europe but across the whole world!
  • Languages: there are more than 200 different languages spoken in Europe. The EU recognizes 23 languages that are in common use among its member countries, where two of every three Europeans live.

Havala made French Breakfast muffins, twice!  The first time there just wasn't enough for everyone to enjoy enough so she four times-d the next batch.
We did a bunch of Geo-Safari's about countries and water areas in Europe to memorize them and did some geography on the world's waters.

We watched a movie about education from California about a school and a man who really fought to improve a school that was harsh but inspiring.  We also watched "Are we not all beggars?" and made some connections between that and Nory Ryan's song about trying to take care of people.  We have made many connections through the week to the horrible fact that thousands died side by side the wealthiest nation in the world.  We talked about how the same thing can be happening here in the US and how we all really don't know what it is like to starve or be truly poor (like Elder Holland said).

We liked the book :D.

We also liked watching the CNN 10 since it was more focused for students and taught us a lot about some major events that are going on in the world. (We will probably watch it more often now. The anchor has some great puns!)

See y'all tomorrow!

  1. Looks like you all got really into it this week! Great job! We enjoyed reading Nory Ryan's Song as well. We'll have to try out some different foods next time. My kids are really getting into cooking/baking this week.
