Sept Week 3: Eureka Education Inspirements!

This week we will seek to
Open minds
Make connections
Be inspired
through the lens of math and science and have some
EUREKA!!
moments.

So this week, we will use the lens of logic and deduction to find truth about education and make connections before doing our own fun!

OPEN MINDS:
To start off, let's have fun with looking at truth, which is the pursuit of any education:
Now let's look at this scientist's own pursuit of truth!
(He's from NASA!!!)

Now let's take this discussion of truth home!   Gather your fellow family students and each of you find at least one scripture that has to do with truth and share it with each other.

PUZZLES AND PATTERNS: (Crust skills)
One of the great parts of math and science is looking for truth through solving puzzles and finding patterns.  Let's get our minds open by doing all three of the following:
#1- do a puzzle this week and try to make connections between doing the puzzle and figuring out the puzzle of your own education

#2-find at least 5 patterns in nature this week and capture them either by cutting and pasting examples to the comment section or on your own blog post; taking pictures of them; or drawing your own versions of the.  Make it 5 or more!!

#3- try to solve one or more of the following or check out the video option below for riddles:

or do one of the TED puzzle videos like this one:

MAKE CONNECTIONS: (can be Core and/or Crust, depending upon what you do with it!)

DO BOTH: (These won't take a lot of time. I read the book aloud to my kiddos and it took 15 minutes for one chapter.  The first little part is a bit confusing when the birds are talking but then it makes more sense.)
#1-Study the life of Thomas Edison any way you want to!  A kid's book, an online video (check with your parents)...whatever works for you!  Try to look at things that he learned that helped him become who he was.

Here is an actual video of him! https://www.pbs.org/video/american-experience-day-thomas-edison/
"In the fall of 1922, a film crew came to West Orange, New Jersey to document Thomas Edison going about his day. In this silent film, they capture the prolific inventor discussing new ideas with employees, conferring with his secretary, and checking in on the newest production techniques for producing one of his most famous inventions: his incandescent light bulb."

#2-Let's crack open that "Math and Magic in Camelot" book!  Let's read the first 2 chapters and do the fun challenges at the end of each!

BE INSPIRED! (Core time!  Have fun!)
Now take one of the things you learned about above and take it deeper!  Do a project or activity that you feel inspired to do by doing the above:
-do more riddles!
-take one thing that Thomas Edison did and do more research on it
-create a prezi on the history of riddles or anything else you want to
-do more with what you read about in "Math and Magic in Camelot"- like research more about Cher Ami and tell us about it or create your own compass course for someone else to navigate and have them do it.

Share your experience in a post or a comment on this blogpost by Wed night!  Then plan on spending some time on Thursday morning reviewing other people's inspirements and experiences and making comments on at least 2 people's work.

PARENT PREPARATION
Parents, could you make sure that:
-your kiddos understand what is expected above :D
-help them post both their inspirements by Wed night and comments on Thursday morning
-you have at least 10 dice per child for our activity on Thursday (If this is not a possibility, please let me know and I will adjust the activity. Hillary, you can borrow some from us if you don't have that many.)
